Satyam Mishra, an undergraduate student in Informatics and Computer Engineering, successfully completed the summer semester with 4 out of 5 courses achieving A+ (4.00).
There is one course remaining - History of the Communist Party of Vietnam - to be announced at the end of August, and the Indian student believes that he will score another A+. So how did Satyam Mishra overcome his difficulties with online learning to get such excellent results? Let us follow the conversation with the student of Informatics and Computer Engineering major.
- Hello! Congratulations to you on achieving great academic results in the last summer semester with all A+ grades. Can you share how you feel when receiving such good news? And for the last course, which is quite difficult for international students, what do you think the result will be?
- Thank you for your well wishes! I still can’t believe once again that I did it. I felt so much excitement and enthusiasm at the same time when I got this news. I was sleeping when my best friend Le Anh Duc told me to check the results on portal and then I saw all A+, and I was so happy for that. For the last course, The History of Communist Party of Vietnam, I agree it is quite difficult for international students. But Prof. Dr. Phung Chi Kien and Prof. Nguyen Quynh Hoang has their own way of making this subject interesting. They make all facts and figures visualize us in our minds, that way it becomes easier for us to understand. And I already got 9.7 as participation score and 9.5 in midterm exam, which means only final exam is left and then I will get my A+ for it as well. I also want to add for Marx Leninist Philosophy, for which I also got A+. The professor who taught me is Prof. Dr. Toan Ngo Dang. I mentioned him because the way he taught us the basics was exquisite and habile. Without him teaching the basics, this subject must have been more boring. He made this subject interesting to learn in his own creative way of teaching, and in this point all international students agree.
- Hanoi is in the period of social distancing and VNU-IS students have been studying online since May 1. Online learning has certain difficulties and limitations, so how did you overcome them to get such a high score? Can you provide some tips on how to study online effectively?
- This question is difficult because I really do not like online learning. I love face to face interaction and it is even more tough when you’re a computer science student because you need your instructor there to solve your doubts and look at your code on the screen. When summer semester started, all that in my mind was to get a scholarship and there is no perfect way to score A in all courses. After all subjects got registered, I went to library and borrowed books, then came back and finished lessons on my own one day before classes to have insight of what professor is going to teach, as classes are online and it’s tough to catch up with speed. So, I had to be ready in advance. All professors share exam schedule on the very first day of class, so my aim is to finish all chapters before that day and start revising. Finally on exam day, I am ready to give my best, and if there is any problem occurs then from Office of Academic Affairs, Miss Viet My is always ready to help.
- We have been informed that you are a very active student, who studies hard whether in class or online learning. In your opinion, what should students do and train themselves to have a positive and great motivation in studying?
- I do not think of myself as the most active student, but maybe I am active because I always have a lot of questions. I am not that smart so until my doubt is cleared, I keep on asking the professors and that makes professors even love me more. I don’t know how they do it, because if someone asks me the same question again and again, I won’t be able to tolerate. Anyway, I would like to thank all my professors for tolerating my pandemonium curiosity filled questions. The only thing I would like to tell my fellow students to do and train themselves to have a positive and great motivation in studying is to know why you are doing it. For example, when you’re going to an informatics class, why are you going there. If you know why you are going there then you will be more positive, highly enthusiastic and greatly motivated person in class. Like I, myself when I enter a class, I think I am investing my 3 hours into this class, and I need to know what professor already know and this will help me head towards my long-term goals that is to be a cyber-security specialist. So, to put it all together, if you know why you are doing something, then even if any hurdle was to come, you will not stop until you have succeed in that task. The best part is that you will be positive, enthusiastic, and highly motivated to do it.
- You have stayed in Vietnam for more than 1 year, are you used to living and studying here? If you had one piece of advice for international students who wish to study in Vietnam, how would you advise them?
- Still can’t believe it has been more than a year now, as it feels like I came yesterday. If I had to give one piece of advice for international students who wish to study in Vietnam, I would say there are multiple opportunities to grow and a chance to grow with an everyday growing country and their university. There are a lot of chances to learn and explore diverse and respected Vietnamese culture. You will learn how to live on your own, manage expenses and when you’re in trouble, Vietnamese universities always got your back. From entrance to graduation, it will be a great experience for you. So, my advice is if you’re looking for adventures and exploration to grow academically and personally too, Vietnam is the best place to study.
- Thank you so much! Wishing you success in every step you take. Good luck!
